Experimenting with natural dyes

The other week we were studying natural dyes and what plants can be used for dyes.  I had come across a recipe for homemade, naturally dyed play dough, so the boys and I made some play dough to go along with our science lesson.

We used carrots to make orange play dough.  The carrot juice was not concentrated enough so we added paprika to help make the play dough a darker orange.

Experiencing the texture of the flour and salt mixture while we waited for the carrots to cook.

Cooking the carrots to extract their coloring for tinting the play dough.

Natural play dough tinted with carrot water and paprika.
